Client Checklist – What Should I Bring

Do I have to lodge a tax return?

Most people need to lodge a tax return, but not everybody.  The most common circumstances that mean you have to lodge are:

  • you earned over $18,200
  • you had tax deducted from your wages or investments (even if it’s only $1) o
  • you ran a business during the financial year, even if the business made less than $18,200

There are other factors, too.  The ATO has a helpful questionnaire you can answer online if you are unsure whether you need to lodge.  For more information visit https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Lodging-your-tax-return/Do-you-need-to-lodge-a-tax-return-/

What if I have missing documents?

We are able to track down all the information that the ATO has on file for the past 10 years.  This can include PAYG Payment Summaries (formerly called Group Certificates), bank interest, share dividends, private health details.  We can also advise the quickest way to get replacement copies of documents, as well as explain what deductions you can legitimately claim without receipts under current ATO rules.

What happens if I fail to lodge in time?

The fine for failing to lodge a tax return is up to $900 ($180 per month up to maximum 5 months).  However their current policy is not to fine taxpayers who are due a refund.  And even if you owe money the ATO can consider waiving the penalties if the late lodgment was due to adverse personal circumstances (e.g. marriage breakdown, serious illness).  The ATO are more reasonable than many people think and they recognise that falling behind on tax can be due to factors outside your control.

When will I get my refund?

After lodging your tax return we’ll let you know if you’re entitled to a refund. Most refunds will be issued within 12 business days when lodged online. If you provided us with Australian bank account details then your refund will be paid directly into your account.
